Congress President Gudrun Mosler-Törnström met, on 7 November 2016 in Strasbourg, with a delegation of twenty Ukrainian young local leaders involved in a study visit organised in the context of the World Forum for Democracy. “We believe that a good local governance system is key to restore people's confidence in their institutions. Engaging citizens at the local level, and in particular the younger generation, is a way to anchor democratic principles in a society based on respect for human rights, and to renew the political class responsible for building such a society".

In this respect, some young leaders already took action using the opportunity given by the European Local Democracy Week (ELDW). Among them were Yuliia Kabanova and Oksana Shevchuk, two councilors of the city of Fastiv – an active partner of the ELDW. In this framework, Fastiv organised many activities promoting citizen participation such as an intergenerational activity, a game on elections and a seminar on “Art as a way of uniting people”.
